Hurricanes Receive CJFL Volunteer Recognition Award

The Hamilton Hurricanes have been honoured as this year's recipient of the CJFL's Rick Smoke Memorial Volunteer Recognition Award. This prestigious award is named after the late Rick Smoke, former CJFL Treasurer, who passed away in 2013. It serves as a tribute to the outstanding commitment to volunteerism exhibited by a CJFL team throughout the past season.

Barry Emo, the Head Coach of the Hurricanes, expressed immense gratitude upon receiving this accolade. He shared his sentiments, saying, "We are deeply humbled and genuinely thankful for this recognition." Emo was quick to divert the spotlight away from his team, emphasizing that the true winners are the dedicated community partners who carry out this important work on a daily basis, as well as the players, coaches, and executives who embraced various community initiatives.

This season marked Emo's inaugural year as the Head Coach of the Hurricanes. Emo had made it abundantly clear during his introductory interview with the OFC in the offseason that community involvement held a special place in his coaching philosophy.

He remarked, "It's very important for our players to understand that they are not just part of a football team but also contributors to a larger community dynamic. The impact of the team extends beyond the playing field and into the community where they live, and that’s where they can help make a difference.”

Emo went on to say how he wants the players to realize that when fans come to support the team on a hot summer day, the team, in turn, should be willing to reciprocate by engaging with and supporting the local community.
